Back II Afrika - Day 5

Project Africa
Back II Afrika - Day 5 (7/18/18)

I awake around 6am daily and our place does not have heating so that's a bit of a struggle despite how beautiful it is. The nights are definitely the hardest, but mornings are pretty difficult too. The joy and energy from the learners at Eldomaine High School are enough to bring the warmth back to the day though. There is so much excitement whenever we are on campus, and we meet so many beautiful souls everyday; it's pretty awesome. I work with kids regularly, so I guess I am a bit used to the feeling, but being thousands of miles away immersed in a sea of faces that look like mine amplify it tenfold.

In the morning, several presenters including Dr. Deo Chimba, Dr. Landon Onyebueke, Mr. Efrem Jernigan, and Lemond IMAG Brown taught about solar energy and did demonstrations on how the solar panels and lights work that we will be handing out to Kliptown residents. We then got a chance to put the theories to work as we actually assembled the lights, charged them, and turned them on!

We loaded up the buses after that to go take a tour of The University of Johannesburg. After looking at some of the beautiful campus, we were able to put on a small show in their theatre where I joined in on the cypher. It was fun to be in the freestyle moment of the music allowing it to flow.

The day was nowhere near finished though. We were off to Sophiatown next for a cultural walking tour rich with the history of their founding, music, controversy, traditions, and successes. We even got to visit one of the oldest living residents at her home for personal anecdotes and some stories about the Soweto boycott. It feels so cool to get these pockets of personal experiences from real people welcoming us into their lives.

STAY STRONG. STAY EXCELLENT. STAY CONNECTED.

Amani,
Rahkua
