The Voyage - Day 8

The Voyage - Day 8 (7/29/15)

The vast lush vegetation is just so beautiful and full of life.”

Today we drove for about 4 – 5 hours from Accra to Kumasi. The vast lush vegetation is just so beautiful and full of life. We passed through the Ashanti village where the people and markets and cloths are so vibrant. Although it is clearly an impoverished area, according to American standards, the richness of culture and thriving livelihood is impressive.  In the midst of all the beautiful indigenous culture though, the presence of self-rejection and assimilation is still apparent…It hurts to see the huge billboards selling the women on their lightening creams in order to “love themselves” and seeing the large numbers of women with relaxers and weaves. It’s such a weird dichotomy. The tours today included the National Cultural Centre, Prempeh II Jubilee Museum, and the Manhyia Palace for the Palace Museum. It was a very long but fulfilling day. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some of the footage out to y’all soon.  We stay on the move. Tomorrow we go into the villages!

Rahkua
